Sociolinguistics is the descriptive study of the effect of any and all aspects of society, including cultural norms, expectations, and context, on the way language is used, and the effects of language use on society. Corpus linguistics is the analysis of naturally occurring language on the basis of computerized corpora. Usually, the analysis is performed with the help of the computer, i.e. with specialized software, and takes into account the frequency of the phenomena investigated. This book introduces students to the ways in which techniques from corpus linguistics can be used to aid sociolinguistic research. Corpus linguistics shares with variationist sociolinguistics a quantitative approach to the study of variation or differences between populations.
